Quantum Darts Antigrav – A Closer Look
Looking back several decades we saw a completely different stereotype when it came to buying darts compared to our Antigrav offering. The heavy or bulky barrel profiles were common, but for players, making barrels thinner was essential to enhance opportunities for tighter grouping. To achieve this, manufacturers experimented and introduced a new copper tungsten based material which was further technologically advanced for manufacturing in comparison to brass & had a much more dense size to weight/mass ratio. The objective of making thinner barrels was then achieved as the material would allow them to make the barrels thinner whilst maintaining the heavier weight. In the present day, darts are made from a nickel tungsten based material, and the addition of nickel to the material composition is essential for raw material purposes.
In darts rules (PDC / WDF or other Governing steel tip bodies), a maximum barrel weight of 50g has been described & a maximum overall length of 30,5cm, but there is nothing regarding the minimum weight criteria for darts. Typical ranges for players darts therefore currently are within 10g & 50g.
When we throw a dart, it follows a parabolic arc, reaching an equilibrium point between the force applied, gravitational pull and air resistance. This equilibrium is crucial for accurate aiming. With lighter barrel weights, like those of the Antigrav darts (15g/17g) players can experience a more controlled and precise flight over a short distance however there is a need for a positive, intentional throw. Sometimes, any errors within a players throw can be highlighted because of this.
Barrel Profile
Our Antigrav darts are best suited for front to middle grippers due to the smooth rear section, but this smooth section is required as a feature in order to keep the barrel diameter down. The outer diameter of the darts are well matched to the outer diameter of the dart shaft for a smooth transition, but this also means that the material around the thread is thin, hence there are no grooves at the rear / section 3 described below. The Antigrav darts boast a meticulously crafted profile, which can be broken down as follows:
- Section 1 – Tapered and machined from raw material, this section ensures a smooth transition from the nose diameter to the outer barrel diameter, keeping a thin and light profile.
- Section 2 – Featuring closely pitched radiused grooves, this straight section supplies a reference point for grip without being overly aggressive, allowing for a smooth release. Our griptide darts for example are a different grip level altogether.
- Section 3 – A smooth, thin section with the Quantum Darts logo, highlighting both elegance and quality in design.
The below image highlights the tapered nose at the point end, you will note the diameter at the nose has also been kept down as much as possible to aid deflections.
A standard 32,0mm black point is fitted which contrasts elegantly against the natural finish of the tungsten and laser engraved quantum darts logo.
Barrel Specifications
Made up of a 90% Tungsten (W) 10% Nickel (Ni) composition the Antigrav darts are available in two weights. Each of the corresponding barrel lengths & widths are different. These dimensions are as follows pictured below:
